CHAPTER 99: April 19, 2026 Assignment and Book Review: LOOK CLOSER by David Ellis.

May 4, 2026

ROUTE: Canton, MI to Charlotte, NC: 612 miles

Sunday April 19th, my last assignment ended dropping my trailer at our terminal in Canton to have a Local Driver deliver it. While at the terminal my truck received its 20,000 miles maintenance service. I started my day with a shower, fueled and headed out at 3:00pm. The trailer was sitting at our terminal so there were no deadhead miles. I drove seven hours with an hour break for dinner and shut it down at 11:00pm.

Monday April 20th, I started my day at 9:30am and drove three-and-half hours to the consignee and arrived at 1:30pm. The trip took 10.5 hours which is roughly what it should have been.

BOOK REVIEW: Look Closer by David Ellis (2022), THRILLER – RATING (****)

A captivating thriller that keeps the reader guessing what is going to happen next. Starts strong, slows down a little and the last third is a cat-and-mouse game that can’t be put down.

Assistant Law Professor Simon Dibias has a troubled past. His mother had a stroke and eventually committed suicide which derailed his life. He’s estranged from his father whom he blames for his mother’s demise. Years pass and Simon’s father is brutally murdered. Simon is a suspect but has a fairly solid alibi. Vicky Lanier-Dibias is Simon’s wife of almost ten years, but she has secrets from her past that are haunting her. Lauren Betancourt, Simon’s first love and who broke his heart as a teenager reappears into his life nineteen years later. Her actions threaten to break up his marriage and hers. Christian Newsom is a financial advisor for the very-wealthy and has a checkered past. He is approached by Vicki to invest $21MM that she will have access to after her tenth wedding anniversary that is soon approaching.

The book starts with the murder of Lauren by Simon but things will get more complicated as the story evolves and the relationship among the main players becomes intertwined. By the end things are not what they seem and people are not who they pretend to be or are they?

Overall entertaining.
