MAUMEE, OH to WESTBURY, NY: 660 miles + HAZMAT + Destination charge (600 loaded + 60 deadhead + $200)
Thursday September 24th, this load was ready for pickup the day before at 6:00pm but I needed to re-certify my DOT Medical. I preferred to take care of that and pickup the load on the 24th. I started my day at 7:15am with the pre-trip of the truck then I fueled and added DEF. I drove an hour to the shipper arriving at 8:00am and left at 10:30am. I drove seven hours straight and shut down for the night at 5:30pm. Though that seems early to shut down the problem is that the consignee was located in Long Island, NY, and there were not any truck stops in their vicinity.
Friday September 25, I started my day at 5:00am and though I was only 200 miles from the consignee this portion of the trip took five hours due to the horrendous traffic always present on the George Washington Bridge. I arrived at the consignee at 10:00am and it was a Hellish experience from the get-go. The entrance to their driveway was a tight right turn off a busy street. Since it was my first time there I didn’t realize, until it was too late, that I needed to make a wide swing in order to clear the metal barricades. Once inside their facility the situation did not get any better. I was able to turn around at the end of the lot. Then I had to wiggle the truck, including maneuvering back in the busy roadway, in order to get into the dock door.
BOOK REVIEW: Murder at the Grand Alpine Hotel by Lucy Foley (2026), THRILLER – RATING (*****)
Lucy Foley masterfully replicates Agatha Christie’s narrative in this new Miss Marple locked-room murder mystery set in the 1950s Swiss Alps.
The narrative is vibrant. The many characters are described in intimate details. There’s a British prominent and his wife, a glamorous Hollywood movie star, a Parisian police inspector and many others. A person is found dead in the resort’s gondola on an early morning and the fun begins. Many subplots that kept me guessing trying to figure it out and by the end I was rooting for the criminal.
Very entertaining as were all the Agatha Christie books.
