CHAPTER 148: July 31, 2026 Assignment and Book Review: JAR OF HEARTS by Jennifer Hillier.

August 25, 2026

LOCKPORT, IL to MAUMEE, OH: 370 miles (250 loaded + 120 deadhead).

Friday July 31st, my day started at 7:00am EST getting a glimpse of the sunrise at the Petro Truck Stop where I had spent the night in Wisconsin. I drove half-an-hour to make the previous delivery. I left the consignee at 9:30am EST and drove two hours to this shipper which I had picked up a load earlier in the week. That trip alerted me of an error by the navigation system that sent me on a route that required a left turn where one was not allowed so I had to adjust my driving accordingly. I arrived at the shipper at 11:30am. Maneuvering the truck into the slots for empty trailers was a daunting task as the shipper had parked some trailers where their presence made it more difficult to straighten out the truck. Additionally, the slots were set in angle fashion which tends to be more problematic. However, now with four years of trucking experience I can adjust better to the circumstances.

I left the shipper at 1:30pm and drove five hours to the consignee with a short thirty minute break to rest as sometimes it hits me unexpectedly. There was also traffic on the route. I arrived at the consignee at 7:00pm.

After dropping off the loaded trailer and picked up an empty. Unfortunately, after pulling out of the parking slot I realized that one of the doors was not closing correctly and reported the trailer to our Safety Department. I was instructed to put it back and take a different one as I already had another assignment going to Memphis. I put a sign on the trailer that it was out of order and informed the shipping office so they would not load it. They were grateful.

BOOK REVIEW: Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier (2018), THRILLER – RATING (****)

A psychological thriller following the lives of three high school friends that reunite fourteen years after the disappearance of one of them.

Angela Wong, a beautiful and popular girl disappears after a party. Her best friend, Georgina Shaw, has no clue what happened to her but fourteen years later she is charged in connection with Angela’s murder after her remains were found behind Georgina’s home. Kaiser Brody, the third leg of that friendship is now a Seattle police detective and shocked by the revelations. Georgina’s life is upended going from a rising star at a pharmaceutical company and engaged to the CEO’s son to an innate in the Washington State prison system. Georgina spends five years in jail for her part in covering up the crime and her boyfriend of those days, Calvin James, is arrested as the killer, but he escapes from custody. That murder identifies him as the infamous Sweetbay Strangler, a serial killer that the police had been chasing for years.

Once Georgina is released from jail a new wave of killings occur in similar fashion as Angela’s death. Has the Sweetbay Strangler returned or is it a copycat killer?

Entertaining with some strange twists-and-turns that kept me guessing.
