CHAPTER 104: April 30, 2026 Assignment and Book Review: THE STEPSON by D.L. Fisher.

May 15, 2026

ROUTE: Woodburn, IN to Woodruff, SC: 630 miles (611 loaded + 19 deadhead)

Thursday April 30th, I started my drive at 10:00am after completing the pre-trip. Then I drove an hour-and-half to the previous consignee. I left there at 2:00pm and drove half an hour to this shipper. I’ve done this trip so many times I loose count but it’s a relatively easy assignment with decent miles. Both facilities are drop-and-hook and both are 24/7. This shipper requires that the trailers be swept clean so I had to do my trucker domestic duties before being allowed to drop the empty trailer. I left there at 4:00pm and drove four-and-half hours for fuel and a needed break. I caught the glimpse of a beautiful sunset while there. Then I drove an hour-and-half to a truck stop in Kentucky that has easy parking and a 24/7 diner. I shut it down for the night at 10:30pm then had a pulled-pork sandwich with onion rings and baked beans.

Friday May 1st, I started my day at 10:00am and took a bacon egg and cheese sandwich on Texas toast for the road. Part of the route on I-40 is still being repaired from damages caused by Hurricane Helene and there’s always a slowdown. I arrived at the consignee at 5:00pm after driving five-and-half hours with a short break in the middle.

BOOK REVIEW: The Stepson by D.L. Fisher (2025), THRILLER – RATING (****)

Suspenseful with many twists-and-turns that kept me guessing throughout the entire narrative and has a surprise ending.

On the evening of her first wedding anniversary Carrie is sitting at home getting ready for a fancy dinner with her husband. She’s startled with a knock at the door and there’s an eighteen year old boy. He’s not delivering flowers so who is he? Carrie is shocked to find out that he’s her husband’s son but he had never told her about him. Why? What other secrets is he keeping from her? She hasn’t been completely honest about her past, so does that even the score?

The next day the body of a seventeen year old girl resident of the exclusive gated community where they live is found drowned fully clothed in the community pool. Carrie’s stepson is the prime suspect as he was the only stranger in the community that night. Soon another seventeen year girl from the community goes missing and then a third. Is her stepson a serial killer?

There’s a slew of other characters in the story. The nosy neighbor, there’s always one. Other residents. The police investigators. The wealthy lawyer husband. The stepson’s mom and more.

Overall entertaining and quite amusing.
