Chapter 19: 10/22/25 Assignment and Book Review: The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

October 24, 2025

ROUTE: Mooresville, NC to Clayton, IN: 599 miles (576 loaded + 23 deadhead)

I started my day on 10/22 at 09:00 and dropped off the previous load. Then drove 23 miles to the shipper of this assignment. From there it was roughly a nine-and-half hour drive to the new consignee and they are open 24/7. The delivery was scheduled for the next day at noon, so there was no need to rush to the consignee. I choose to spend the night at the FJ in Spiceland, IN. They were an hour from the consignee, normally had ample parking and a Denny’s open late.

I arrived at the FJ at 22:30 because I had to stop for fuel and do my required DOT 30 minute break. I parked the truck and had spaghetti and meat balls for dinner, it was far from great but a change from fast-food hamburgers. My workday was 13.5 hours with 10 hours of drive time, as I was slowed down by traffic. I was tired and hungry.

The next day I delivered the load on time and waited for my next assignment.

BOOK REVIEW: The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls (2006), MEMOIR – RATING (***)

Irresponsible parents. The dad was drunk and the mom had very strange principles especially regarding wealth.

Amazing story of perseverance despite poverty stricken upbringing and constant moving around.

The book over-focusses on the struggles and little on the achievements she managed.
