ROUTE: Maumee, OH to Newington, CT: 793 miles + HAZMAT (656 loaded + 137 deadhead + $100)
Tuesday May 19th, I arrived at the shipper at 7:30pm. This facility is a 24/7 drop-and-hook but it wasn’t ready so I had to wait two hours until they finished loading the trailer. This load is hazmat and to transport it the trucker needs to have a special endorsement on their license. I left the shipper at 9:30pm and drove half hour to the Petro in Perrysburg, OH, to weigh the truck and decided to shut down for the night as it was already 10:00pm. The total weight was 71,440lbs of the maximum allowed by DOT Regulations is 80,000lbs. I had dinner at the truck stop’s in-house diner which wasn’t too bad.
Wednesday May 20th, I started the day with a shower as I still had a voucher from a previous time I had fueled at one of their facilities. Shower credits last for 10 days after fueling. I left the truck stop at noon and drove six hours with a stop for fuel along the way. There was a lot of traffic on I-80 for road repairs so I shut it down at 9:00pm at a Russian restaurant in Loganton, PA, that has truck parking and great food. I had the beef stroganoff with mash potatoes.
Thursday May 21st, I started my day at 7:00am after the minimum ten-hour DOT Regulation mandated break. I drove five hours to the consignee and arrived at 1:00pm to make the delivery.
BOOK REVIEW: The Room Next Door by Wendy Walker (2025), THRILLER – RATING (****)
The story is a slow burn thriller with more teen drama than Beverly Hills 90210. The narrative goes back and forth between events that occurred fifteen-years in the past where one of the protagonist dies on the night of the July 4th fireworks and present day.
Three high school senior girls are best friends, Brook Lowry attended Brown University and now is married no kids and is a writer. She’s having an affair and during one of her outings she hears a noise in the room adjacent then the occupant is found dead. Eva Shay disappears on the evening of July 4th fireworks. Her body body floats to shore two weeks later and it’s ruled as an accidental drowning. Carrie Hollis is now the Chief of Police of the small town where they all used to live. She never believed that her friend’s death was accidental and that obsession has soured her marriage. She has an eight-year old daughter now.
There are a slew of other characters that add to the drama. Carrie & Brook’s parents and their husbands. The high school counselor at the time of the accident. Eva’s high school boyfriend. The summer people that vacationed in the town. The other kids in their grade and Brook’s brother.
The second half of the story moves at a faster pace as the pieces of both cases start to come together.
Overall very entertaining.
