ROUTE: Georgetown, KY to Lansing, MI: 459 miles (384 loaded + 75 deadhead)
Another 14 hour workday. Brutal. Started my day at 9:30am with a bacon, egg & cheese sandwich and a Red Bull. I drove two hours to deliver the load of my last assignment. After the live unload I drove two hours to the shipper for the next assignment. After picking up the loaded trailer I stopped for a late lunch at Noble’s Truck Stop then drove five hours to our terminal for fuel, do laundry and spend the night. My day ended at 23:30. Tomorrow I have another 90 minutes to get to the consignee and await the next assignment.
BOOK REVIEW: Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConagny (2025), FICTION – RATING (***)
The first half of the book is captivating. A woman washes up ashore on a remote island near Antartica. Who is she? What’s she doing there? There’s mystery about the inhabitants. There’s misdirection by the author that is not fully explained later which is dissapointing.
The second half of the book is weak. Having five POVs doesn’t help, it distracts and makes it confusing. Some chapters are minuscule adding to the confusion.
The multiple love interests seem to be added to give depth to the story but I got the opposite feeling. It felt shallow and superimposed into the narrative.
The characters though well defined felt short in creating a bond with the reader. Rowan, the protagonist, was not a likable person. The father, Dominic Short, was too stoic. The kids were fine, the youngest the most likable but it’s a typical profile of a smart nine year old. Probably would benefit from a standard Hollywood happy ending.
The author seems to have done thorough research but the subtle messages about the dangers of climate change were anything but subtle.
