Chapter 17: 10/19/25 Assignment and Book Review: The Return of Ellie Black by Emiko Jean

October 21, 2025

ROUTE: Romulus, MI to Memphis, TN: 754 miles (726 loaded + 28 deadhead)

I’ve done this assignment many times before. It requires around twelve driving hours so needs two days to complete. There’s a Pilot truck stop in Hurricane Mills, TN with ample parking and across the street there’s Log Cabin Restaurant, which is very good. It’s about ten hours from Romulus, MI, as we cannot drive over eight hours without a 30 minute break. From there it’s a two-and-half hour drive to Memphis. I did a reset at our terminal in Canton, MI and headed out on Sunday 10/19 at 10:30 which allows me to arrive before the restaurant closes. I had a 10oz sirloin with a baked potato, home made cooked apples which are delicious and a salad. For dessert a merengue coconut pie that is heavenly. Delivery was schedule for Monday 10/20 at 10:00.

BOOK REVIEW: The Return of Ellie Black by Emiko Jean (2024), FICTION – RATING (**)

I thought this book would be more of a mystery thriller book where the detective follows clues to find the bad guys.

The book is disturbing and I’m not sure I understood the messages the author was trying to send about women empowerment and parenting. Though there are no graphic details of torture there’s enough innuendo of mental and sexual abuse to make my stomach turn. The final is absurd and adds fuel to the unsettling nature of the story.

Unfortunately there are sick people out there that do atrocious things to harmless teenage girls. I can find that in the news. I don’t need to buy a book with a fictional story to imagine it.

This book was not entertaining.
